Chores build responsibility, confidence, and life skills for our tamariki. We use this chores guide across our groups and sessions where families are really busy, parents are doing lots of things ‘for’ their tamariki, and not with their tamariki, and one result of this can be they lose a sense of ‘family’ or ‘team.’ Chores really support the idea that families work together and support each other.
This guide provides a great list of chores outlining age-appropriate tasks which ensure realistic expectations can be set.
If you’re a professional working with parents or tamariki, you might offer it to tamariki who are wanting to take on some greater responsibilities. It might be a great ‘take home’ piece for all the tamariki in your class to then kørero more at home about - often homework includes tasks that support parents too! Or as above, if you’re working with a family where there’s a bit of a disconnect, this is a conversation that can really help, and support the family acting on it.
